This is the Alabama state category. Alabama's capital city is Montgomery, and its postal abbreviation is AL. Alabama entered the Union as the 22nd state, on December 14, 1819. It is the 28th largest state, with an area of 52,237 square miles. Settled by the French in 1702, the region was acquired by Britain in 1763. Most of it was ceded to the United States after the American Revolution in 1783. Alabama seceded in 1861 as one of the six original states of the Confederacy, and was readmitted to the Union in 1868. It was a center of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. The northern part of the state lies in the Appalachian Highlands, which have coal, iron ore, and other mineral deposits; the rest consists of the Gulf coastal plain, which is crossed by a wide strip of fertile agricultural land. Alabama's Mobile River and its tributaries form the State's primary river system.
