This is the California state category. California's capital city is Sacramento, and its postal abbreviation is CA. California entered the Union as the 31st state, on September 9, 1850. It is the 3rd largest state, with an area of 158,869 square miles. In the west, coast mountain ranges run north to south, paralleled by the Sierra Nevadas in the east; between them lies the fertile Central Valley, drained by the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. Southeastern California is largely comprised of desert. Spanish explorers visited the coast in 1542, but the first European settlers arrived in 1769, when Spaniards founded a Franciscan mission at San Diego. The area became part of Mexico and huge cattle ranches were established. Settlers came from the USA and, during the 1846 Mexican War, US forces occupied California; it was ceded to the United States at war's end. Gold was discovered in 1848, and the ensuing Gold Rush swelled the population to 250,000 just four years later.
