This is the Florida state category. Florida's capital city is Tallahassee, and its postal abbreviation is FL. Florida entered the Union as the 27th state, on March 3, 1845. It is the 26th largest state, with an area of 59,928 square miles. Located in southeastern USA, Florida occupies a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. This long peninsula has many lakes and rivers, plus vast swamplands. At the southern tip, there is a chain of islands, the Florida Keys, stretching to the southwest. Major attractions include the Everglades, Florida Keys, and Disney World in Orlando. Discovered in 1513, Florida's first permanent settlement was Saint Augustine. Originally Spanish, the area passed to the English in 1763, returning to the Spanish in 1783. The U.S. purchased Florida in 1819 and, even though the state seceded from the Union in 1861, it was little affected by the Civil War. It developed rapidly during the 20th Century when much of its swampland was drained.
