It is the 47th largest state, with a total land area of 6,459 square miles. Located in the Pacific Ocean 2100 miles west southwest of San Francisco, Hawaii consists of eight large and 124 small volcanic islands. Its highest point is Mauna Kea, at 13,678 feet above sea level. There is an important U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. Settled by Polynesians during the 9th century AD, King Kamehameha united the islands in the late 18th century. In 1893, the monarchy was overthrown. The USA annexed Hawaii in 1898 and, in 1900, Hawaii became a United States territory. Agriculture and tourism are two mainstays of the Hawaiian economy.
