This is the Indiana state category. Indiana's capital city is Indianapolis and its postal abbreviation is IN. Indiana entered the Union as the 19th state, on December 11, 1816. It is the 38th largest state, with an area of 36,420 square miles. Indiana is located in north central United States, south of Lake Michigan. The state was explored by the French early in the 18th century and was ceded to the British in 1763. It passed to the USA after the American Revolution. The Native American population was finally subdued around 1811. Indiana was a rural area until industrialization took place late in the 19th century. Access to Lake Michigan and to the Ohio River in the south ensure efficient distribution of the state's agricultural and manufacturing products. Indiana is situated in a rich farming region, and the development of heavy industry in the northwest has also made Indiana a leading machinery producer.
