It is the 15th largest state, with an area of 77,358 square miles. Nebraska is located in west central United States, in the Great Plains. Omaha is the state's largest city. The region was acquired by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804. The territory of Nebraska was created in 1854. Nebraska's land rises gradually from the east to the Rocky Mountain foothills in the west, and is drained chiefly by the Platte River, a Missouri River tributary. The eastern half of Nebraska is farmland, where farmers grow grain and raise cattle and pigs. The state's economy is mainly agricultural.
