This is the Nevada state category. Nevada's capital city is Carson City and its postal abbreviation is NV. Nevada entered the Union as the 36th state, on October 31, 1864. It is the 7th largest state, with an area of 110,567 square miles. Nevada is located in western USA. The United States acquired the region at the end of the Mexican War in 1848. When gold and silver were found in 1859, settlers rushed in to Nevada. Much of the state lies in the Great Basin, but the Sierra Nevada mountains rise steeply from its western edge. Nevada's dry climate and steep slopes have hindered the development of agriculture, and most of the state's economic wealth comes from its mineral deposits. In cities such as Las Vegas and Reno, gambling and tourism provide important sources of state revenue.
