It is the 44th largest state, with an area of 9,283 square miles. New Hampshire is a New England state, located in northeastern United States on the Canadian border. The area was first settled in 1623. Much of New Hampshire is mountainous and forested. The principal rivers are the Connecticut and the Merrimack, and there are more than 1000 lakes. Farming is restricted by poor, stony soil, and is mostly concentrated in the Connecticut River valley.
