This is the New York state category. New York's capital city is Albany, and its postal abbreviation is NY. New York State entered the Union as the 11th state, on July 26, 1788. It is the 30th largest state, with an area of 53,989 square miles. New York is located in northeastern United States, bounded by the Canadian border and two Great Lakes as well as three New England states and the Atlantic Ocean. New York City is the largest city in the state. Much of New York State is occupied by the Adirondack Mountains and the Catskills, but the west features a rolling plateau that slopes down to Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and the Saint Lawrence River valley. The Hudson River and its tributary, the Mohawk, are the primary rivers. Henry Hudson discovered New York Bay in 1609, sailing up the river that bears his name. New Netherland was established as a Dutch colony in the Hudson valley, but in 1664, the British seized the colony and renamed it New York.
