This is the North Dakota state category. North Dakota's capital city is Bismarck, and its postal abbreviation is ND. North Dakota entered the Union as the 39th state, on November 2, 1889. It is the 17th largest state, with an area of 70,704 square miles. North Dakota is located in north central United States, on the Canadian border. French explorers and traders first visited the area in 1738. The USA acquired the western half of the area from France in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, and the remainder from Britain in 1818 when the boundary with Canada was established. Dakota was divided into North Dakota and South Dakota in 1889. The region is fairly low-lying and is drained by the Missouri River and the Red River.
