This is the Oregon state category. Oregon's capital city is Salem, and its postal abbreviation is OR. Oregon entered the Union as the 33rd state, on February 14, 1859. It is the 10th largest state, with an area of 97,132 square miles. Oregon is located in northwestern United States, on the Pacific coast. The Hudson's Bay Company and other fur traders set up trading posts here during the 1790s; beginning in 1842, the Oregon Trail brought waves of settlers each year. Oregon Territory was formed in 1848. The state is characterized by forested slopes on the Cascade Range and the Coast ranges. Between the two mountain ranges lies the fertile Willamette Valley. The Columbia and the Willamette are the major rivers. Oregon's farms produce cattle, wheat, and dairy products as well as fruits and vegetables. Its forests produce more than a fifth of the nation's softwood lumber.
