This is the South Carolina state category. South Carolina's capital city is Columbia, and its postal abbreviation is SC. South Carolina entered the Union as the 8th state, on May 23, 1788. It is the 40th largest state, with an area of 31,189 square miles. South Carolina is situated near the Atlantic Ocean, in southeastern United States. The state's main port is Charleston. The English built permanent settlements in the area starting in 1663. South Carolina became a royal province in 1729, and its plantation society developed around rice, cotton, and indigo crops. It was the first state to secede from the Union, and the first Civil War shots were fired at Fort Sumter. Union troops later devastated the state. South Carolina's terrain rises from its coastal plain to rolling hills on the Piedmont plateau, then to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest. South Carolina is drained by many rivers, including the Savannah River, which forms most of the border with neighboring Georgia.
