This is the Texas state category. Texas' capital city is Austin, and its postal abbreviation is TX. Texas entered the Union as the 28th state, on December 29, 1845. It is the 2nd largest state, with an area of 267,277 square miles. Texas is located in south central United States, bounded by the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast and the Rio Grande River to the southwest. Pine-covered hills and cypress swamps abound in the state; cotton and rice are primary crops; oil and timber are the leading industries. Cattle are raised on the plains near the Rio Grande River valley, from where the land rises to the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas and the Great Plains of the northern Texas Panhandle. Spaniards explored the area early in the 16th century, and it became part of their colony of Mexico. By the time Mexico attained independence in 1821, many Americans had settled in Texas. They rebelled against Mexican rule and in 1836, after defeating the Mexican Army, they established the Texas Republic.
