Vermont

This is the Vermont state category. Vermont's capital city is Montpelier, and its postal abbreviation is VT. Vermont entered the Union as the 14th state, on March 4, 1791. It is the 43rd largest state, with an area of 9,615 square miles. Vermont is a New England state located on the Canadian border in northeastern United States. The Green Mountains range north to south and dominate the terrain; much of the state's western border is formed by Lake Champlain. In 1609, Samuel de Champlain discovered the lake, but permanent settlers did not arrive until 1724. For many years, land grant disputes with New York and New Hampshire dragged on. In 1777, Vermont declared its independence, retaining this unrecognized status until it was admitted to the Union fourteen years later. The region is heavily forested and arable land is limited. Dairy farming is the most important form of agriculture in Vermont.
