This is the Kansas state category. Kansas' capital city is Topeka, and its postal abbreviation is KS. Kansas entered the Union as the 34th state, on January 29, 1861. Kansas is the 13th largest state, with an area of 82,282 square miles. The state is located in central United States. Besides the capital city, other major Kansas cities include Wichita and Kansas City. First visited by Spanish explorers during the 16th century, the region passed from France to the United States under the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. It was Native American territory until 1854, when the Kansas Territory was created and the area was opened for settlement. Part of the Great Plains, the land rises from the eastern prairies to the semi-arid high plains of the west. The area is drained by the Kansas River and the Arkansas River. Kansas is the leading producer of wheat in the USA.
