This is the Missouri state category. Missouri's capital city is Jefferson City and its postal abbreviation is MO. Missouri entered the Union as the 24th state, on August 10, 1821. It is the 18th largest state, with an area of 69,709 square miles. Missouri is located in central United States, west of the Mississippi River. Its largest cities are Saint Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield. French traders settled the area during the mid-18th century. The United States acquired the region in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The Missouri Territory organized in 1812, and became a major westward migration conduit. Missouri joined the Union as a slave state, but when the Civil War began, sympathies were divided. Much violence occurred, but the state did remain in the Union. Missouri is divided into two parts geographically: north of the Missouri River is prairie country, where farmers grow corn and raise livestock. South of the river are the Ozark foothills and plateaus.
